A Friend…

  Is someone that everyone needs
A friend
Is that special one
A friend
Is someone you tell EVERYTHING
A friend
Is someone you never lie to
A friend
Can be a boy or a girl
A friend
Is someone that is always their
A friend
Will always listen to you
A friend
Always has input to give
A friend
Will never leave you in the dust
A friend
Will help you through the thick and the thin
A friend
Will always stand by your side
A friend
Will never let you down
A friend
Is someone everyone needs
What would you do if you didnt have a friend?

Where is the Indian State?

September 27, 2008 Leave a comment

The recent bomb blasts in India, followed by sluggish response from the Home Ministry has created doubts about the safety, secularity and sovereignty of Mother India. It also raises questions and concerns on the operations of Indian Intelligence Bureau. UPA led government is irrepressible to handle the situations and continues to mum, shows their prime interest in vote banks and instability with in the coalition.

In this context, an article published in Dubai based news daily-Khaleej Times, written by Barkha Dutt – Group Editor, English News, NDTV, lynched the Home ministry about the recent happenings. Follow the link below.

Billion Beats – The Pulse of India

September 27, 2008 Leave a comment

We must think and act like a nation of a billion people and not like that of a million people.

Dream, dream, dream! - Kalam

says the dreamer from India, the great Missile Man and Honorable ex-President of India Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, whose golden words of wisdom are to be sown in the billions of minds. To propagate the waves of his visions to inspire and build a healthy India, he started a website

                                                   http://www.abdulkalam.com/

and an e-paper called BillionBeats

We wish him all success towards his 2020 Visions and let us all join hands and be a part of this drive.

Take a close look at the image…..Now try and guess or recall what it is….I hope by now, million signal transactions might have been occurring on your hippocampus.

I’m quite sure you - ingenious, would be guessed by now……………….Any way scroll down to get some more info…….

Its a Hard Disk.

Yes….It is a 1956 made first ever hard disk. You will be amazed to know the capacity. Its just 5 MB.

IBM launched the first computer with this hard disk on 1956 – 305 RAMAC.

The Disk Storage was a major component of the IBM 305 RAMAC weighing more than a ton in weight.

Little more about IBM 305 RAMAC

The 305 was a flexible, electronic, general purpose data processing machine that enabled businesses to record transactions as they occurred and concurrently reflect each entry in affected accounts. It maintained records on a real-time basis, provided random access to any record, eliminated peak loads, and could simultaneously produce output by either print or punched cards.

The 305 system consisted of the IBM 305 Processing Unit (containing the magnetic process drum, magnetic core register and electronic logical and arithmetic circuits), the IBM 370 Printer (an 80-position serial-output printer with tape control carriage), the IBM 323 Card Punch (similar to the IBM 523 Gang Summary Punch, providing for 80 columns of output punching), the IBM 380 Console (containing the card feed, typewriter, keyboard and indicator lights and control keys), the IBM 340 Power Supply (supplying power for all components except the motors in the 350 disk storage unit), a utility table adjacent to the console, and the IBM 350 Disk Storage Unit.

                                                                          IBM RAMAC 305

The 350 Disk Storage Unit consisted of the magnetic disk memory unit with its access mechanism, the electronic and pneumatic controls for the access mechanism, and a small air compressor. Assembled with covers, the 350 was 60 inches long, 68 inches high and 29 inches deep. It was configured with 50 magnetic disks containing 50,000 sectors, each of which held 100 alphanumeric characters, for a capacity of 5 million characters.

Disks rotated at 1,200 rpm, tracks (20 to the inch) were recorded at up to 100 bits per inch, and typical head-to-disk spacing was 800 microinches. The execution of a “seek” instruction positioned a read-write head to the track that contained the desired sector and selected the sector for a later read or write operation. Seek time averaged about 600 milliseconds.

                                                           350 Disk Storage in operation

In 1958, the 305 system was enhanced to permit an optional additional 350 Disk Storage Unit, thereby doubling storage capacity; and an additional access arm for each 350.

The dual arms used to record or read data from the 350 disk storage unit.

With storage capacities of 5 million and 10 million digits, and the capability to be installed either singly or in pairs, the 350 provided the 305 system with storage capacities of 5, 10, 15 or 20 million characters.

More than 1,000 – 305s were built before production ended in 1961. The 305 RAMAC was one of the last vacuum tube systems designed in IBM.

The Sixth Crossing in Dubai

September 14, 2008 Leave a comment

Dubai is achieving yet another mile stone in the rapid paced city development, when RTA announced the winner of architectural design competition, for the sixth crossing over Dubai Creek.(Already five in place that’s the reason for the name.). This is an architectural marvel and will be holding couple of world records on the Arch Bridge Construction, when it is built. The 205 meters high arch and 1.6 Kms long bridge will boast world record, in line with the recent success stories on world’s tallest,biggest……..etc.

There will be 12 lanes on both directions for the road transport and a metro rail network passing through the centre. The total cost is estimated around a mammoth figure of $820 million. The expected year of completion is 2012.

The bridge is designed to connect the Lagoons in the creek with the rest of the main land. The aerial photography showing the proposed route.

So far too good. Any one please answer me………..”Do I need to pay for the SALIK……..

Note: Salik is Road Toll System.

Tremor in Dubai

On September 10,2008 – Wednesday, Dubai experienced a mild quake at around 3:10 PM. The intensity of the quake on richter scale was around 4.9. Even though the magnitude was not that severe, it caused a  wave of panic among the residents of Dubai and northern emirates. The jolt felt much pronounced on sky scrapers around the region. The epicenter of the quake exists around 43kms west of the Qishm Island near Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas in the Arabian Gulf. The reason for the quake is due to a fault line on the Zagros belt on Iran.

The Zagros mountains are formed due to the collision of two tectonic plates – the arabian and Eurasian plates.(Refer Picture) The Zagros mountains exits around 1500 Kms in length on the border between Iran and Iraq. The Zagros mountains are  playing a major role in trapping the fossil fuels and facilitating the oil richness in the region.

A question may arise here. What is meant by a fault?

The fault is a rock fractures which is showing signs of relative movement. These faults usually exists on the boundary of two tectonic plates. In this case arabian and Eurasian plates.

The reason for earth quakes, when narrated in laymen term, are due to the sudden release of energy due to the slippage of plates along a fault.
The arial photograph of Zagros mountain range is shown here.

These are some pictures showing a fault line on the mountain ranges.

Although Dubai is far from the active seismic zone, the reverberations were transformed into the three local faults lines which are located on Dibba (near Khorfaqqan), Wadi Hum and Bidya. Hence the reason for this quake.

The question to ponder is “Whether all the civic infrastructure in this region are designed to withstand a bit aggressive jolt……..?”
